\"Beckomberga-hospital\"<\/a>[02 October 2013] Coming up at the former Swedish psychiatric hospital Beckomberga is a\u00a0televised conversation with Ana Betancourt, Bj\u00f6rn Ehrlund, Tor Lindstrand, Henrik Nerlund and Sven-Olov Wallenstein, moderated by Peter Lang and STEALTH.unlimited.<\/p>\n

During the 20th century, Beckomberga was Sweden\u2019s and one of Europe\u2019s largest psychiatric hospitals. When it closed down in 1995, the buildings designed by architect Carl Westman were to be transformed into schools and apartments. However, most of them remained empty for years until recently, when renovations started.<\/p>\n

\u2018TALK SHOW: normalcy\u2019 will explore issues like: Can architecture be detached from its original mission? Should we destroy the old to make room for the new? Can society afford to lose symbolic memories? These questions are posed in the light of Beckomberga being a symbolic institution in transition and in the light of cultural events as a way of re-setting that memory. The talk show will further go into the notion of architecture as an inscriptor of normalcy in society and draw parallels to the ongoing restoration and repurposing of abandoned historical monuments into luxury housing projects common in Stockholm today.<\/p>\n

The event is part of\u00a0The Normalcy Project, a cluster of related academic courses, art events and public presentations organized by Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm between September 2013 and April 2014 at the Cultural Hall of Beckomberga.<\/p>\n
